Face Oils: Friend or Foe

Face Oils: Friend or Foe

Over the past few years, we’ve been hearing a lot about face oils and the benefits to skin. From drugstore brands to high-end cosmetic company brands, to specially designed oils; there is a face oil for you. But what are the real benefits? How do you choose the right oil? Are face oils for everyone? Let’s tackle those questions and also gain insight into why this new skincare product is being applauded.

What are face oils?

Face oils can be single carrier or a combination of oils used to enhance your skin. They are multipurpose. They can be used as cleansers, treatments, and moisturizers. Depending on your preferred use, you may have two or three face oils for a variety of uses. In combination with a moisturizer, the oil helps to seal in all the nutrients from your serum and moisturizer; creating a protective barrier that blocks pollutants that can harm the skin.

Face oils may seem new, but they actually date back to the time of the Egyptians and the Aboriginals. Oils such as castor, olive, sesame and emu oils were used to make the skin more soft and supple. One memory from childhood is my mother using Vaseline on my skin. Yes, far from being a nourishing oil, I know. I don’t recommend using it on your face, because it is not as easily absorbed as a lighter oil. Our indigenous ancestors knew the importance of skin care, eons ago.

In the end, you have to choose the products that are right for your skin type and the environment your skin lives in.

Who should use them?

In deciding whether to use a face oil, first determine the needs of your skin. Are you dry, oily, or combination (usually oily in the t zone and dry to normal on the cheeks). What additional skin care concerns would you like to address? (age prevention, fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, acne).

Once you determine these factors, then you can begin to determine the face oil that is right for you. There are certain oils you’d want to stay away from if you’ll be in the sun all day, because the components might harm the skin. Where other oils would be more appropriate for the outdoors, some of which protect the skin from the elements.

I use face oils for a variety of tasks. I use a face oil to remove makeup. With foundations becoming more long-wear and stay in place, you need a cleanser that will take everything off without scrubbing your face raw. I think we’ve all cleansed our faces really in preparation for the night, only to wake the next morning to remnants of yesterday’s makeup. Oils completely breakdown long-wearing foundations, waterproof mascaras, eyeliners and brow pencils. I use another face oil in my skincare regimen to nourish and moisturize my skin. The Moringa Oil used in Naturamedic’s Pampered Beauty Face Oil is beneficial to the nourishment of your skin as it contains a variety proteins, vitamins, and minerals like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, magnesium and so many more. Perfect a pampered skin experience!

How to use them?

Cleansing face oils are applied as a makeup remover. I use about 10 drops and gently massage it into my face. I may let it sit for a minute or two to break everything down. I simply wipe with a warm washcloth or rinse with warm water. It takes everything off without a lot of rubbing and pulling of the skin. Once everything is off, I wash with a mild cleanser to remove any oil residue that would block the absorption of my skincare products. Here, I apply an essence or treatment lotion, then a serum. Depending on the time of year, I may apply a moisturizer and press my face oil on top, or I put moisturizer in my palm and add a drop of oil.

Can essential oils be used as face oils?

I’ve had people ask if you can use an essential oil as a face oil. Keep in mind that almost all essential oils should be combined with a carrier oil. Pure essential oils tend to be too strong to use directly on the skin. With the addition of Rosehip Seed Oil, Naturamedic’s Pampered Beauty Face Oil targets fine lines and wrinkles for a youthful glow for mature skin and keeping young skin looking nourished and healthful. A light oil, it is non-greasy, and is absorbed quickly into skin offering a comfortable feel. It is a part of the Pampered Beauty line of products we have available.

Consider using a face oil. You will see a noticeable difference in the tone and texture of your skin. It is one of the most luxurious ways to pamper your skin and maintain what nature gave you.
